Authority? When was this bestowed upon me? I don't recall requesting
authority, nor do I remember paying for it. I certainly am unprepared to
accept any responsibilities that might accrue.
Besides, what qualifications have I?
Seniority - Although I've been on this list a lot longer than most, there
are several people who were here years before my arrival.
Credentials - I haven't any. Not only are there several degreed and
professional linguists in our midst, but there is a growing number of those
who are currently studying linguistics at university. My degrees are in
Mathematics and Computer Science. Never took a single linguistics course.
In short I have no bona fides.
Age - While I am certainly significantly older than the mean age of this
list, there are several who may claim to be my senior. Besides, although
authority is often numbered among the accoutrement of age, it shouldn't be.
All that age guarantees is a receding hairline and an expanding waistline
and I've managed to acquire both with very little effort.
Popularity - Well I do have a following of adoring fans including my mother,
my wife, my daughter and my grandchildren. Although some suspect that their
adulation is biased, I shouldn't think so.
No, I'm afraid the mantle of Authority would fit rather poorly over my
shoulders. But thanks for thinking of me.
