I've read somewhere that Allen/Alan/ etc. French Alain, harks back to the
Alani, one of the tribes that made up Atilla the Hun's horde and hung around
after his defeat....  Maybe....  I think they were Indo-European from the
Persian area....?
And again, IIRC, the Ossetes of southern Russia/Caucasus are thought to be
descendants.
