I don't think you're doing it to be lazy or inconsiderate; it's
probably simple ignorance. I'm posting this to the whole list,
because it may help more people - it took me the better part of half
an hour to figure out, an experience that I want to spare the rest of
you.

I don't know which version you're using, but mine is 4.5 (for Linux)
and I've worked out how to send plain-text mail:

In the Edit menu, choose Preferences -> Mail & Newsgroups, and under
"Display plain text messages and articles with" check "Fixed width
font". This is likely to cure your proportional text problem.
Now choose Formatting, and check "Use the plain text editor to
compose messages". This ensures that you don't type HTML if you don't
want to.
And under "When sending HTML messages to recipients who are not
listed as being able to receive them" check "Convert the message into
plain text". (Your setting is probably "Send the message in plain
text and HTML", because that's how your messages arrive)
To avoid sending HTML mail to the list altogether:
Go to your address book and select the entry for the list. Then click
Properties; a form will pop up, with a checkbox in the lower right
corner, labelled "Prefers to receive HTML". Uncheck it and click OK.
Anything you send to this address will henceforth be plain text,
even if you type it in HTML in the first place (but with all the
other things you just did this is unlikely to happen).
Now you're about it, it's probably a good idea to check all addresses
to see if there are any more people who have no use for HTML mail
(like me :-)

When you've followed all these directions, it's got no reason to
complain (though my experience with Netscape is that it's going to
find something to complain about anyway).
I understand that you're stuck with Windows, but are you really stuck
with Netscape? I've heard that Eudora works better and is much easier
to use. I see what you mean by "this wretched Netscape mailer".
