Uh oh. I really would like to be familiar with those marks of yours now. But
one thing is sure: there should be no other difference between 'a' and 'aa'
(same with other vowels) than the length of the vowel. I'd demonstrate the
difference this way: if Finnish 'a' is one and 'aa' two, a Spanish 'a' on
the stressed syllable is one and a half.
Hey, many of you certainly know good resources in the web where I could
check what those marks mean exactly and even learn more. Could you recommend
me some of them?
