I don't know if I'd go with "each continent". I'd recommend organizing
the study more logically from a perspective of looking at a language
from each of the major language families, and in some cases more than
one. IE covers about half the world's speakers so it may be worthwhile
to check out languages from each of tha major branchess too like
Romance, Slavic, or Indic languages.
Interestingly, I haven't seen anyone recommend any conlangs yet. A good
one to start with would be either Loglan or Lojban to see the "logical"
approach, then maybe Klingon for something that's a bit more "exotic".
You can always browse Langmaker (www.langmaker.com) and see what else is
out there. It should provide a good source for ideas.
And if you are in the mood, you can also take a look at Sasxsek.
