I concur with Nik Taylor.  These are all perfectly good English, with the
slight exception of the second clause of #2, which is a little bookish. You
could keep the same syllable count by changing to "...and thought I had
heard some" or "...and I thought I heard some".

#4 is a tad cryptic, but grammatically OK.  I interpret it as : "words for
my ears" = something spoken in confidence, and "with words of a friend" =
the sort of "constructive criticism" that only a friend dares give you.
