Incidentally I just read about the development of Finno-Saamic
vowels into North Saami. {ä}, i.e. /&/ changed into {á} or {ie}:
*äjmä ['&jm&] 'needle' > áibmi ['a:jbmi] (or ['&jbmi])
*käti ['k&ti] 'hand' > giehta ['gi_Ehta]
{ie} is in this case a falling diphthong. I don't know if
it was in Old French.
