Hm... I've never heard them called pencils before. They're normally
called pacers here. Which I'm pretty sure is another trademark... The
trademark-free version is always 'mechanical pencil', but it's only seen
on the packets of pacers made my companies who don't own the trademark.
(If a word becomes a part of the language, why do companies get to keep
the trademark? It doesn't really seem fair.)
(I hate pencils/pacers. Except maybe for drawing, but I don't do any of
that. If I make a mistake, I generally prefer to cross it out so I can
see where I've been, the exception being with good copies, but places
like Schools and Unis generally don't accept things written in pencil
anyway.)
