It's always bugged me that the vowel in "bag" and "sag" is considered to be
the same as the one in "bad", "sad", "ban", etc. In my idiolect,
for whatever reason, that g changes things, and the /&/ gets realized
as a diphthong, something like [&E], but a bit higher and tenser.
