Those are all animals I recognize as well, since I've lived in the LA
area
during my formative years, and then in Berkeley during grad school. My
one sister lives in Eureka, CA, coastal but not what I'd call central
California, and my other sister lives with her husband and two kids in
Felton, near Santa Cruz... coastal, and central, but their ecosystem is
decidedly redwood. I'm trying to think where the Los Padres National
Forest is, and I'm blanking, much to my humiliation. What is the town
you live in and where do you go to school? Near Santa Cruz? Near Palo
Alto? Sheesh! California is vaster than I thought. Above Berkeley?
In the Santa Rosa area?

Chapparal country is very dear to me. We lived in the San Gabriel
Valley
and I still dream about it. Dry, tawny hills, oak scrub and cactus,
yucca,
rattlesnakes, possum, pumas, and warbling coyotes.
