No, the secondary differences are not enough. To an untrained French ear,
"reed" and "rid" are completely homophonous.

I switched because I want to use as few Microslug applications as possible.
I already switched to Opera for browsing, but Opera and the Webmail I was
using were somehow incompatible (you may remember a few mails I sent with
lots of spaces between each line. That was when I tried to use the Webmail
with Opera). So I was still obliged to use IE for the webmail. By using
Eudora, I solve this problem :) . And since it seems now to work (I hope so
at least, I've just had a few more glitches, but hopefully they are solved
now. I just hope that I didn't by accident set the "Reply-To" field), I'll
now always use it.
