In my defense, I did finally purchase a copy of Wells' book.  Well,
volume one of three, anyway.  Fascinating stuff.

And based on what I've read of it so far, it's very hard to find data
about the stuff we're talking about here (intonation/stress), relative
to the more obvious phonetic differences.

Also, the idea that there are phoneticians who dispute the very
existence of phonemes blows my mind. :)
