No, I don't think it's related. I would rather say that they first came with
the idea of the image of a red smiling cow, and the name came naturally after
the picture.

NOTE: the last commercial about it in France had for slogan: "La vache qui rit,
mais on ne sait toujours pas pourquoi" :)))
