Pretty random, I think: a good case is "francais" vs. "danais", now spelled "danois". It's not likely that one dialect was used for "French" and another for "Danish".

They're probably pronounced /m@j@/ and /f@j@/ anyway. :-) The initial v- in English "vixen" (vs. "fox") is probably an example of the same thing.
