It could very well mean '(from the place) near the wall'.
Wall is here a townwall (to defend the city) I think.

I've been wondering, What would the surname "Vanderwall" ( Van der wall) mean? Does it mean "belonging to the wall?" (my knowledge of Dutch is absolutely nil).
