I've always assumed there was contamination, somehow, from another *Foreign
Entertainment Craze*-- viz. the Carioca, a now forgotten dance of the
40s/50s. It was, of course, Brazilian in inspiration if not origin-- I
think it was created in Hollywood, actually.
