Swedish in fact has *both* kinds: back vowels are normally labialized while front rounded vowels are protruded. The catch is the sound which I transcribe [8\] or [2_w] in ASCII: it is a fron vowel but labialized rather than rounded, so that the lip-gesture forms a minimal distinction between [8\] and [2] -- /BP 8^) -- B.Philip Jonsson -- melroch at melroch dot se Solitudinem faciunt pacem appellant!
