When I begun using computers into conlanging circa 1990, I used WordPerfect (4.2 that time). I pretended to make a lexicon database in Lotus 123 (some release 2) but then I move it to WordPerfect (5.0 and then 5.1 at that time). I usually do alphabetizing manually while I'm adding new words... I don't see it as big trubble and there are thinks I like from word processors (now a days I'm using Word 97) over spredsheets or any other database manager: freedom. I've tried to use Shoebox (a free program for manage lexicon files found at SIL: http://www.sil.org for answering Eric's question) but found it quite difficoult to implement so I'm just using it to store some NGL files Stephen DeGrace posted on NGL list. For work purposes I begun using a program called PC-KIMMO which uses a Field Oriented Standard Format which are specially formated text files, and after I developed a "cheap and dirty" program for converting from and back into .CSV (comma separated text files) I guess I will use the combination of .CSV and FOSF files for lexicon management. (.CSV files can be opened in Excell, Access or any text editor like Word which would allow me to use the advanced search and replace features with no macro creation).
