I think this is a fabulous idea, and given enough advance warning, I'll
volunteer to host an eastern US "nexus" myself. I'll be in Nashville,
TN, so I'm relatively central to the midwest and most of the east coast.
It's not much more than 10 hours drive from most of that area, and
flights to Nashville usually run under or around $100 for a direct.
My apartment's not that big, and I don't have a videophone, but those
things can be worked around.
