One word: discrimination. The main reason why the fight to open the
marriage to everyone in Holland was so fierce and finally succeeded: not
because gay people wanted so much to marry (actually, there was, and there
still is, a great amount of gay people who are just against the institution
of marriage), but because an institution which discriminates people because
of reasons of sexual orientation is illegal and must disappear or be
reformed. It also helps to have the first article of your Constitution
forbidding discriminations of any kind :))) .
