I can give the technical reason. :p The eszett symbol (name notwithstanding) is in origin a ligature of two lowercase letters "s" (the first being the long, IPA [S]-like kind). Capitalize either or both of these, and bingo, no ligature, and no eszett. *Muke! -- http://www.frath.net/
