And "à" (that's a-grave :) ) to distinguish it from "a" (and "là" to
distinguish it from "la"). In my Narbonese, one the other hand, both ^ and
` can have this distinguishing role (Narbonese use of accent is quite
different from French use). For instance, the circumflex is used to
distinguish the preposition "â" from the feminine singular definite article
"a" (the third person singular of the verb "avôre" is "ha", so it doesn't
need to be distinguished by an accent in writing), while the grave accent
is used to distinguish the adverb "là" from the pronoun "la" (like in
French, except that the adverb doesn't have exactly the same meaning as in
French :)) ).
