I had a similar experience with a 1950s recording of Gosta Nystrom's
(diacritics probably omitted) "Sinfonia del Mare"-- the final movement has a
soprano aria, which for a long time I simply assumed was in Swedish. Even
though an Engl. translation was included, it was a long time before I
realized she was singing in English
Same with tango lyrics, which tend to baffle non-Argentines, until they see
them in print, or appropriately glossed. I and friends consistently took
[...alaBuro] to have to do with boredom, aburro; in fact it's "...al lavuro"
Italo-Argentine for '...(go) to work'; though perhaps there's a nice play on
words there.
