There's always the "extra-short" diacritic, whic I've seen used with both stops and trills alike to derive taps/flaps. In hand-written notes, I use "/R/" with a rounded upper corner (after the example of canIPA.)

There's also a continuum between [v] and [v\]. Hearing the distinction is pretty hard for me in the first place, but I think German /v/ might be a little softer than that of English (but still not as soft as Finnish /v\/) ... perhaps this can explain some of the confusion? Especially if Dutch [v\] would happen to be relatively tense. John Vertical
