devoid was originally a past participle of "to void", in the sense of
"to empty" (a use which seems to survive only in medical contexts).  I
suppose it's technically an adjective, but I don't think of it that
way.  Mostly, I regard "devoid of" as an atomic unit, so trying to
assign the bare word "devoid" to any category is fruitless IMD.

But it can be used attributively, just postpositionally rather than
prepositionally. "He was a man devoid of humility", etc.
