Actually, as I understand it the term "Christian" was first used in the book,
"Acts of the Apostles". The book was written in Greek (Koine) and used the
word "Khristianos" meaning those who followed the "Khristos" or Annointed One.
I have never heard of the idea that there was any "military" connotation and I
also thought that "paganus" was from the latin "country dweller" as is the
modern Italian "paese" and "paesano" as well as the French "pays" and
"paysan".
But I could be wrong...
