It is indeed an aspirated [d]. I have always heard the first syllable
pronounced so as rhyme with 'book'. Supposedly, Marathi is the modern
lg which is closest to the language spoken by the Buddha although I find
that very unlikely (for reasons of geography, I know very little about
Indic lgs otherwise). Its early in the morning and my books on Buddhism
are in the bedroom with my still sleeping significant other so I can't
look up the name of the language he is actually likely to have spoken.
