It is indeed an aspirated [d]. I have always heard the first syllable pronounced so as rhyme with 'book'. Supposedly, Marathi is the modern lg which is closest to the language spoken by the Buddha although I find that very unlikely (for reasons of geography, I know very little about Indic lgs otherwise). Its early in the morning and my books on Buddhism are in the bedroom with my still sleeping significant other so I can't look up the name of the language he is actually likely to have spoken. -- Brad Coon hawksinger@fwi.com http://www.fortunecity.com/rivendell/everquest/624 My Conlang and Conculture pages http://www.ipfw.indiana.edu/east1/coon/web/index.htm Most of my pages including my home page http://www.geocities.com/Yosemite/Gorge/7264 My Outdoor and Primitive Skills Pages http://members.tripod.com/~Hawksinger My wine pages.
