Yep, that's it. The Buddha spoke not Sanskrit, but one of the Prakrits,P=
ali I think (as
that's the language that many of the oldest Buddhist texts
are written in).

Yeah, that's how I've heard most people pronounce it. But in terms
of etymology, it's OE, I think. Isn't that the OE word from which we
get the modern English "witch"?
