Watashi wa sashimi ga suki desu.
I like sashimi. (I am the topic, sashimi is the subject).
Watashi wa umeboshi ga hoshii desu.
I want a pickled plum. (I am the topic, umeboshi is the subject).
Anata wa tabako ga suitai desu ka?
Do you want to smoke a cigarette? (You are the topic, cigarette is the
subject)
Kono hon wa Sooseki ga kakimashita.
This book was written by Sooseki.
(literally: As for this book, Sooseki wrote it). (Book is the topic, Sooseki
is the subject).
