If you're working on a Romanisation, why not use
numbers (unless you're reserving those for
tones)? Expecially if they have lots of them.
Certainly nonalphabetic symbols like "!" are used
to signify clicks, so you'd want to make sure
that you're using the correct symbol for the
relevant click.
