I agree. I'n my (incomplete) scheme for coding Ladefoged's feature system in ASCII (by design rather similar to X-SAMPA, but not a transliteration of the IPA) I used ^ to denote '-ized' features, so that e.g. ^j was 'palatalized' while _j was palatal.
