Well, the latter seems extremely improbable to me. BTW, in Dutch we have the same phonemenon: "Oekraïens" vs. "Oekraïns", and "Oekraïner" vs. "Oekraïener". I reasons of spelling and pronunciation, I prefer "Oekraïens" and "Oekraïner".
