Good example, even in GAE - hiccup is ['hIkVp] rather than ['hIk@p] . Hm. I could still argue that the difference is not phonemically significant, since I can't think of any minimal pairs, but now you've gone and cast doubt on a long-held assumption and I'm no longer confident in my knowledge of my own native language.
