Actually, if you believe, as I do, that the "battery" bit was merely
Morpheus' propaganda, then it's not that bad. I suspect that the
machines' basic programming includes a desire to take care of humanity.
The Matrix was set up to preserve humanity from itself. Morpheus
himself said that it was humans who "scorched the sky". So, based on
this premise, I've hypothesized that the original war was between
pro-machine humans and anti-machine humans, and that in the process, the
world was ruined. The machines, in a desperate attempt to preserve
humanity, set up the Matrix, plugging in their allies. Morpheus group
are terrorists determined to destroy the very system that preserves the
human race.
