AFAICT, the -ln and -rn verbs, unless thoroughly lexicalised, most
have a diminutive or iterative or childish or amateur touch. As such
'basteln' is not something I'd expect someone to do professionally
(unless she/he is a teacher to teach 'basteln' to children). Surely a
heritage of the original nature for the -l-/-r- infix. Some pairs
show this quite:
streichen 'to stroke' streicheln 'to pet'
lachen 'to laugh' lächeln 'to smile'
haken 'to hook' häkeln 'to crochet'
