I don't know German, but isn't the German name
for Austria _Österreich_, which means something
like "Eastern Country"?
I've always assumed that English _Austria_ was
just a corruption of _Österreich_, rather than a
derivation from Latin.

P.S. In North America, we always say, "counter-
clockwise." The only time I've heard "anticlockwise"
was from a math teacher who was from South Africa.
