Sidney Lau proffers "gwai1"; it's "gui1" in Mandarin. >>
Hmm...I'm not familiar with traditional tone numbering, I was using
the method I've seen people use to "translate" the Chao tone letters
(1=low 5=high), and I was trying to stick close to IPA usage (excuse
my blatant replacement of the IPA symbol upside down a with /A/).
Additionally, my phonology says that the contrast that the Lau
orthography states as "k/g, p/b" etc is actually
unaspirated/aspirated, which I agree with...
Incidentally, my little brother of 7 years pronounces the vowel /A/
(excuse blatant mis-use!) in Cantonese as /a/ and I'm pretty sure he
uses voiced stops where most people would have unaspirated stops...
