BTW, is it true that natives of Amsterdam pronounce the "a"s in the
city's name as [Q]? That is what I interpreted my Dutch friend
(non-linguist type) to be saying.
In the U.S. the usual pronunciation of "Chicago" has [A], but that
pron. is stigmatized in and around Chicago itself, where [O] ~ [Q]
is the prestige form. Similarly, "Louisiana" is /luizi&n@/ ~
/lwizi&n@/ to most Americans, but anglophone natives say /luzi&n@/.
(Apologies to francophones.) Then there is the fact, abhorrent to
all Illinoians, that some people outside the state say it with [-z]!
