I have a dim memory of hearing the Ents' battle chant "To Isengard"
recited, in which it was pronounced /ajs-/. I tend to say /Iz-/ myself.
There was an early modern antiquarian who reckoned that e.g. Arundel
must be named for the river it's on, whose proper name (which had been
`forgotten') must therefore be Arun. He managed to get a lot of English
rivers renamed by such reasoning. It occurs to me that backforming Isen
(the river) from Isengard (the Iron Enclosure) is a joke that might
appeal to JRRT.
