Some of the Church Fathers say that Matthew's
gospel was first written in "Hebrew" (i.e.
probably Aramaic), but only an early Greek
translation survives. This doesn't seem implausible
to me, as we know a fair number of other ancient books
which survive only in an early translation rather
than the original-language version,
including some of the OT deuterocanoncals/apocrypha.
