It *is* a mantra, fair and square, as the word actually translates as "prayer". *We* even use rosaries, you know! There are 108 beads in a Buddhist rosary -- somewhat fewer in yours I believe. Monks -- including HHDL -- often wear it wrapped around their right wrist like a bracelet, so not even he can keep track of his "Om Mani Padme Hum"s it seems! :-) There are (much) longer mantras too, of course. Many have 108 words, e.g. the Chinese version of the Heart of Transcendent Knowledge Sutra. The last line of that Sutra is a mantra in it self, and occurs in Quenya translation in my sig. The translation is due to David salo, not me! :-) At 21:48 27.6.2000 +0100, Dan Jones wrote:

Has there appeared any Buddha in Caedha in historical times? Else it would be about time for one... ;-) (And don't tell me there wouldn't; Buddhas do appear in all world systems at regular intervals! :-) The Refuge is rather short in its basic form, namely: "I take refuge with the Enlightened, I take refuge with the Teaching, I take refuge with the Order." /BP B.Philip Jonsson mailto:melroch@mail.com ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~__ A h-ammen pennuid i phith! \ \ __ ____ ____ _____________ ____ __ __ __ / / \ \/___ \\__ \ /___ _____/\ \\__ \\ \ \ \\ \ / / / / / / / \ / /Melroch\ \_/ // / / // / / / / /___/ /_ / /\ \ / /Melarocco\_ // /__/ // /__/ / /_________//_/ \_\/ /Eowine__ / / \___/\_\\___/\_\ Gwaedhvenn Angelmiel\ \_____/ / a/ /_adar Merthol naun ~~~~~~~~~Cuinondil~~~\_______/~~~\__/~~~Noolendur~~~~~~ || Lenda lenda pellalenda pellatellenda cuivie aiya! || "A coincidence, as we say in Middle-Earth" (JRR Tolkien)
