Because most SF fanboys either are atheist, agnostic or True Atheist
(don't care enough to even say that God doesn't exist). Of course, said
fanboys and mediocre writers completely forget about the power and
popularity of works like "Dune" (and most of Herbert's stuff).
The other reason is that religion generally gets an utterly incompetent
treatment in SF, with exceptions like "Dune". Usually, when it's brought
in, it's by a fundamentalist atheist writer who has an axe to grind
against it, so religion is characatured.
