That makes sense, although it probably also has to do with the centuries
of persecution that Christians started against the Jews once they had
replaced Roman Polytheism as the major state religion there. In
comparison, you can still find Jews named _Shabtai_ (or _Shapsi_, a
Yiddishized version) after the time of the false messiah Shabbetai Tzevi
- he and his followers never gained any power to misuse.
