It was a moderately common name, I think. It was common to use an
additional "nickname", as with Judas Iscariot (my spell-checker
suggested Escargot for that!) or Simon Peter, or "Brian That is Called
Brian". ;-) Actually, Jesus probably didn't call himself that, it's
the Greek form of the name Yeshua (I think that's the spelling), or
Joshua, and his native language was Aramaic.

Well, of course, because the Jews are still waiting for the
Messiah/Christ, while we Christians believe he has come as Jesus of
Nazareth.

I'm not sure, but I don't think that Yeshua became any less popular, or
at least not that much less popular.
