Even though intercomprehension would be hard for a Quebecois and a Frenchman speaking both their own vernacular, I don't think you can say they have separate languages. They do have separate dialects characterized by a very different pronunciation and a different vocabulary, but the grammars are not that different. I think the difference is equivalent to, say, rural American English vernacular (choose the place :) ) and rural British English (idem :) ). Two very separate dialects yes, but not two different languages (after all, the difference between Quebecois and standard French is quite the same as, say, the difference between Ch'ti - Northern French dialect - and standard French. Still, the difference between Quebecois and Ch'ti are enough to prevent intercomprehension). Christophe. http://rainbow.conlang.free.fr
