If it was so, then the second instance should be a mistake. |Azúcar| being stressed on the *second* syllable, the first a is not stressed and thus the word can take the article |la| without a problem. Really, |azúcar| is a term which can be used in both genders (and I have a bunch of dictionaries, online or not, to back me up on this :))) ). Of course, this may be valid only for Castillan Spanish.
