Subtitling = translating spoken dialogue from one language to another. (In the case of my
story, the original dialogue was in Aramaic and Latin, and then subtitled in
English for an American audience.)
Captioning is usually reserved for same-language transliteration -- intended to help deaf
or hearing-impaired viewers to follow the dialogue.
